We share a common interest: volleyball. I just happened to click on your comment to Ty Loomi's Facebook status. And when I saw your info that tells briefly about your story with Drunk Driving, I was intrigued and later, touched.

I am fortunately still able to play the sport I love (despite the lack of height and getting older, 34). Now, I am starting to love soccer, too. And this is where your story comes in. Your story made me appreciate that I can still do sports and other things I do on a daily basis that are sometimes I take for granted.

I thank you for being such an inspiration to others. I admire that you have found your peace with God after what you have gone through. I am not a very religious person but I was raised a Roman Catholic. And I do believe that things happened for a reason. Things that we, humans, just can't explain. What happened to you could have driven anyone crazy and could have resorted to doing other horrible things such as drugs, violence, and worse, suicide. But you, you stuck through it all and became a better person. I applaud you. I wish there are more of you in this earth, and this lifetime.

More power to your. Good health and more peace.

Thank you for sharing your story. I have grandsons who will be driving next year and I am going to have them read this. Nothing tells it like it is like someone who has been there. You're doing a wonderful service in your effort to save lives and I wish you the very best. Medical breakthroughs happen every day and I pray you will get a miracle that will restore you to a full life.
Thanks again for doing this. I am positive it is making an impact.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. There are SO many who need to hear this. They need to hear a firsthand testimony of the dangers of drunk driving. They need to hear that you can keep a great attitude and have joy and peace no matter what the circumstance. And most of all, our world needs to hear that GOD IS FAITHFUL!!

Your courage, strength, and honesty are inspiring. I have been friends with Sommer for several years now, and as many times as I've seen you I never knew anything about your accident until last year.
I whole heartily agree with Terri. Just because someone LOOKS healthy does not mean they are. I for one have had back surgery to remove a blown disk that came to rest on my sciatica. This injury caused permanent damage to my sciatica nerve and as such I suffer on and off with very severe back pain. If I stand for long periods of time, I begin to suffer with pain. If I sit for long periods of time, I begin to suffer with pain. I carry a cane in my trunk just in case I suffer an attack. Otherwise, I look healthy. Now I have a handicap parking permit that I use when ever I am on the run. And I can tell you I have no trouble with my conscience in using the handicap spot. Handicaps are not designated by degree or severity. Take a lesson from the Lord and try not to judge anyone. For you have no way of knowing what they suffer.

You have major, major courage, my friend! I don't know you accept through our fellow interest in all things MOTU, but I read your story and was touched.

Glad you are on the mend and seem to have a positive outlook. That makes all the difference each and every time.

I must comment on this blog. While I commend you for your rally against drinking and driving, I wish you would rethink what you posted above. You said, "How many times have you seen a completely healthy person park in the handicap parking, with a handicap permit?" As the wife of a man with a neurological disease who has learned to walk again after being in a wheelchair, I would ask of you not to judge people based on how they look. My husband looks perfectly healthy - but he isn't. He has learned to walk again by adjusting to the pressure sensation he feels when taking a step. He may walk perfectly fine for ten steps or even a hundred steps, but then he might misjudge the sensation and stumble. He tires easily and because of that, we continue to park in handicapped parking upon the advice of his neurologist. In other words, we save the energy he has to be used for when he gets into the building - not walking through the parking lot. I cannot tell you how many times my husband and I have been yelled at or given nasty looks. Some people have even had the nerve to tell us we're going to hell for parking in a handicapped parking space. I ask of you to not make an assumption of a person's ability or disability based on how they look, because you have no idea what is going on INSIDE of their body. Some people look perfectly normal while battling diseases that do indeed affect their ability to hold up for mobility purposes. While we do as you on my husband's good days and park in a regular space, there are days that we simply can't. I do understand that people abuse the parking spaces - I encountered that situation just yesterday when I heard a man yell to his passenger that he would be "right back" and told his passenger to move the vehicle if the handicapped enforcement car drove into the parking lot. I had to leave my husband in the car because there wasn't a parking space close enough for him to walk in and then walk around. It is very frustrating! But, please don't judge everyone by the few people who choose to be uncompassionate in their actions. And, keep sharing your story - it is empowering!
